Women of PETA shower on Tower District sidewalk

Two women representing People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) held a passive protest Thursday in Fresno’s Tower District, taking a shower on the sidewalk while advocating for a vegan lifestyle.

Amanda Slyter and Meggan Anderson waved to passing motorists and to people at nearby restaurants as they showered on Olive Avenue at Broadway. They stood behind a banner that read, “Go Vegan! 1 lb. of Meat Equals 6 Months of Showers.”

The goal was to link PETA’s mission to Californians’ concerns about the state’s drought.

According to PETA, California dedicates about 80% of its water to agriculture. The organization says the average amount of water needed to produce a ton of vegetables is 85,000 gallons, compared to 4 million gallons to produce a ton of meat.
